History of Banana: Fruit of many years of history
Banana is a fruit surrounded by an enormous amount of history about its origin, but regardless of the source which itself seems to be clear is the age of this . So much so that there are theories that put it as the first fruit that existed on Earth.
Its origin is in Southeast Asia, specifically in the jungles of Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia, to date sites that produce bananas . It is believed that in the Middle Ages the Arabs brought the fruit to Africa and which the name given has to do with an Arabic word meaning ¨ ¨ finger .
Moreover some Portuguese missionaries take care of and develop their culture in the Canary Islands. Themselves with the Spanish , to begin their voyages to the New World were commissioned to carry fruit and history was estimated that in 1516 when planting in Santo Domingo, site that soon spread to the rest of the Caribbean and Latin began America.
But it would be in the late nineteenth century when the modernization of transport systems allowed the banana he began to establish itself as one of the most important export products, allowing producers to find large customers in the U.S. and Europe.
Bananas in Costa Rica
Everything is owed to the railroad. Back in 1870 this small country in the coffee boom and the Government of Costa Rica determined the desirability of establishing a freight train from the Central Valley to Lemon was consolidated .
It was the way of expediting grain exports that came to Germany and England and the concession of the railway system was given to the U.S. Minor Keith .
The idea was successful but was soon noted that the coffee being a seasonal product , complementary alternative should be sought in order to leverage the train.
It was Keith himself who chose to bring Panama banana seeds and grow them on the banks of the railroad . By 1880 it was possible to make the first banana exports from Costa Rica to New York destination and activity never stop. The 360 clusters placed in this sale have become today about 100 million boxes per year.
To reach that figure , the Costa Rican banana industry generated in the last two years an average of 35,000 direct jobs that add some 90,000 indirect but a close relationship .
The National ( Corbana ) Banana Corporation estimated that in the Caribbean region of Costa Rica , 85 of every 100 workers have direct or indirect relationship with the activity of cultivation and production of bananas.
The main customer of the Costa Rican banana is America buying almost 46 % of the fruit , followed by Belgium and Germany with much lower percentages.
