One of the great benefits of this wilderness area is the watershed protection, as the Rincon de la Vieja massif is part of the watershed, between the Caribbean and Pacific, to the northwest of the country. In this area are born thirty two rivers, including the Colorado, White and Drowned.
In this park there is probably the largest population of wild purple orchid, the national flower. It has great tourism potential because of the attractions it has, specifically the scenic beauty and geological features.
The scenic hot springs and the visitor is in the Park, which are very different from the dry forest of the lowlands. The type of landscape that is more humid is the most elevation and precipitation.
The Rincon de la Vieja presents diverse habitats due to differences in elevation and precipitation, the effect of volcanic eruptions and the type of slope. In the lower parts, some of the most common trees are the laurel, the guanaco, the olive, the ardillo, Indian nude, cedar and black chokecherry. In the intermediate parts of the massif, between 1200 and 1400 m, the most abundant trees are the copey, the curd, danto gourd, papayillo, the burío mouse, yos, the iguano, oak, kill-people and white cypress. Of the 1400 meters to near the top, the forests are low and the trees are very branched and covered with mosses and other epiphytes. The most common species here are the copey papayillo the crepe. The top of the volcano is covered with ash and has little vegetation, some plants present are: copey, the poor man's umbrella. The copey is sometimes forming almost pure forests, there cats, tapirs, the gongolonas and black kettles are very numerous. In the park there have been over 300 species of birds, the lark, the peacock, the goldfinch, the Montezuma oriole, swallow riparian Curre tucancillo or green, the red widow, colidorado hummingbird, the owl oropopo or glasses, the parrot frentiblanca and grouse.
Some of the mammals are the mountain goat, the peccary, the agouti, tolomuco, armadillo, bear beekeeper, the two-toed sloths and howler monkeys, white-faced and red. Insects are abundant, stand the beautiful morpho butterflies of which there are four species. Also, you can see more than 300 species of birds, among which stand out the peacock, the bird bobo and mountain finch.
